How to choose the right Bird Feeder Plans:
A bird feeder, also known as a tray feeder, is a device used to supply bird food to birds. They are placed outdoors. The success of a bird feeder depends on the kinds of food supplied and the placement of the feeder. Bird feeders supply seeds or bird food, such as Millet, Sunflower, Safflower, Niger Seed and rapeseed or canola seed depending on the birds as different species have different preferences.
There are many different types of bird feeders built with different techniques. You can choose from many bird feeder plans to find the one that best suits with the kind of birds you wish to attract.
- Seed Feeders: These are the most common type of bird feeders. These can take the design of a tube to hoppers and trays. These feeders use sunflower seed or mixed seed to attract many songbirds such as finches, chickadees and cardinals.
- Hummingbird Feeders: These feeders supply liquid nourishment to hummingbirds in the form of sugar solution. This solution is given a red color to make it look attractive and catch the bird’s attention. It is important to refresh the liquid as yeasts tend to grow in hummingbird feeders and spoil the solution. Petroleum jelly should also be smeared on the feeder’s hanger to prevent ants from crawling down to the feeder below.
- Oriole Feeders: are traditionally orange colored. These feeders are basically designed to serve New World orioles by offering artificial nectar. These orioles have an unusually shaped beak and tongue. Hummingbirds also sometimes feed from Oriole feeders. Oriole feeders may also use fruit foods, such as grape jelly, or half an orange on a peg to attract birds.
- Suet Feeder: is constructed like a metal cage with a plastic coating that contains a cake or block of suet to feed woodpeckers, flickers, nuthatches and other insect eaters.
- Feeders made from Household and Natural Items: These can be built inexpensively by using items found in or outside your house. The items could be used jars, plastic bottles, waste wood, screws and other material.
Bird feeders are often used for bird watching. Many people fit webcams in their feeders to click pictures of birds when they gather in the feeder. Squirrels often try and carry away the contents of bird feeders to their hoard. There are many techniques to prevent squirrels from doing so. Feeders are constructed with perches which collapse under the weight of anything heavier than a bird. Cages are made through which the squirrel cannot pass but birds can. The placement of the feeder is another technique that can be used to shoo squirrels away from the feeder.
