At some point in all of our lives, we all have probably needed more storage space. The closets are full in the house and you can’t get anything else in the garage. You could buy a pre-built storage shed, but they can be quite expensive. Or, you could get yourself a good set of plans and build your own shed.
Whatever you do, don’t do like my friend did, he thought he could build a storage shed without having a set of plans. Unfortunately for him, he spent a lot more money than he had planned and it ended up taking him twice as long to build because he had never built a storage shed before.
A couple other invaluable points you need to know before beginning a project like this. You want to check with your local municipal office and see if a building permit is required and to see what the building codes are. Some people will think they can get by without a permit because it is a small structure, but this is not always the case. You could end up being fined or made to tear your shed down. It’s not a step you want to skip. Also, if you live in a community where there is a homeowners association, you will need to get permission from the association as well.
When you are considering the different plans available to build your own shed, make sure the one you select comes with a material list and cut sheets. The material list will allow you to come up with a pretty close budget for your project, helps keep you from buying more material than you actually need. The cut sheets are really helpful, specially if this is your first building project. The cut sheets will show you the exact lengths and angles to cut your material, so you have all your material ready to go before you ever actually start building. If you don’t have a set of plans, you won’t be able to do this.
Before beginning, decide what you want the exterior to look like. For aesthetic purposes or curb appeal, it is a good idea to design your storage shed to look similar to your house.
When you build your own shed, if you will take the time to consider all of these factors before you begin your project, you will save time and money, and probably a lot of headaches too.
